The cluster is in the inland hills above the Ionian coast, with the valley system of the Stilaro and Allaro rivers shaping this part of eastern Reggio Calabria. The southern Calabrian Apennines rise inland, and the western side of the 15 km area reaches toward the lower slopes of the Serre. The nearest coast is the Ionian shore around Caulonia Marina and Riace Marina. Stilo, the nearest historic town of note, has the Cattolica di Stilo and a substantial old hill town fabric. This area is known for olive groves, hill villages and the Greek-Calabrian cultural zone of the Locride inland.
