The area sits in the Hyblaean countryside of south-eastern Sicily, with a low limestone plateau cut by cave-like river valleys. The coast near Santa Maria del Focallo and Punta Cirica is the nearest strong landscape feature, with long sandy beaches and low rocky stretches on the Ionian side. Cava d’Ispica lies within the area, a long incised gorge with rock-cut dwellings and archaeological remains. The nearest larger town is Modica, which has an extensive historic centre built along a deep valley.
