The cluster sits on the southern edge of the Monti Iblei (the Hyblean Plateau), an area of limestone plateaus crossed by deep karst ravines. The Cava di Ispica gorge and archaeological area lies within roughly 10–15 km. Nearby towns within about 15 km include Scicli and Ispica; the provincial capital Ragusa is about 20 km away and provides the nearest full range of services. Agriculture in the surrounding countryside includes olive groves, vineyards and almond trees. Modica is one of the towns included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing “Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto.” The town of Modica is known for its historic Baroque architecture and for Modica chocolate produced with a traditional method.
