Monti della Laga (Apennine sub-range) lie to the east and their foothills are part of the local landscape. Lago del Salto, an artificial reservoir on the Salto river, sits immediately below Petrella Salto and shapes the shoreline and local valleys. The Salto river valley and surrounding hills are wooded (beech and chestnut stands) with parcels of pastoral and arable land. Parts of the Monti della Laga are included in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, which covers nearby mountain terrain. The nearest well-served provincial centre is Rieti, which provides hospitals, rail connections and a wider range of shops and services. The nearest alpine ski lifts are on Monte Terminillo, roughly a 30–40 km drive. The area is used for lake-based recreation (boating, fishing) and for hill walking on local tracks and forest roads.
