Petrella Salto

Monti della Laga (central Apennines) form the nearby high ground and are within about 15 km of the village. Lago del Salto, an artificial reservoir on the Salto river, lies immediately adjacent to Petrella Salto and provides the local shoreline. The Salto river valley and its tributary valleys shape the local terrain. Parts of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park extend into the surrounding mountains. There are no ski lifts inside the 15 km radius; the nearest alpine ski area is on Monte Terminillo, some tens of kilometres by road. The closest service towns on main roads are Antrodoco (on the SS4) and the provincial capital Rieti, both beyond the 15 km immediate area. The lake and surrounding forests are used locally for fishing, boating and mountain walking.
