The cluster sits inside the built-up area of Rimini on the Adriatic coast with long sandy beaches and concentrated bathing establishments along the seafront. The Marecchia river crosses the city and reaches the sea at Rimini. The historic centre contains Roman and medieval monuments, including the Arch of Augustus, the Ponte di Tiberio (Tiberius Bridge), the Tempio Malatestiano and Castel Sismondo. There is a working small port/marina and a port channel on the waterfront. The city is strongly associated with film director Federico Fellini. Federico Fellini International Airport (Rimini–Miramare, RMI) lies within the municipal area a few kilometres north of the centre. The coastal plain around Rimini is largely flat and intensively developed for tourism and urban uses; the Apennine foothills rise further inland. The microstate of San Marino lies inland and is reachable by a short drive from Rimini.
