The cluster sits in the upper Volturno valley under the Mainarde and Matese sectors of the central-southern Apennines. The Volturno river rises nearby at Rocchetta a Volturno. The Mainarde area is protected by the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise a short distance to the west, and the Matese massif lies to the south-east. The nearest ski lifts are the Campitello Matese lifts, roughly an hour's drive depending on road conditions. Isernia is the nearest town of size, with the usual provincial services, rail station and a substantial historic centre. The area is known for mountain pastures, transhumance country and Samnite archaeology, with Pietrabbondante within the wider province though not inside the immediate radius.
