The site sits on the Sele river plain with the Tyrrhenian coast and sandy beaches (Lido di Paestum) on the seaward side. Inland are the lower Cilento hills and the beginnings of the Apennine foothills. The area is inside and adjacent to the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, which is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site that explicitly includes the archaeological areas of Paestum and Velia and the Certosa di Padula. The archaeological area of Paestum and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum are on the doorstep. The nearest larger town is Battipaglia, a market and industrial centre with rail connections on the Naples–Reggio Calabria line; the city of Salerno is the nearest major city to the north. The surrounding plain is extensively farmed and is a centre for buffalo-milk mozzarella production and summer beach tourism.
