The area lies on the Cilento coast, with the Tyrrhenian Sea at Marina di Casal Velino and the low hills of the Cilento immediately inland. The Alento river reaches the sea here, and the Alento valley opens behind the coast. Much of the surrounding inland area falls within Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni National Park. The nearest larger coastal centre is Vallo della Lucania, which provides the main services for this part of the coast. Velia-Elea, the Greek and Roman archaeological site near Ascea, is within the local area and is part of the UNESCO listing for Cilento and Vallo di Diano. The coast here is known for small beaches and headlands rather than an urban waterfront, and the wider area is known for olive groves and Cilento food traditions.
