The cluster sits in the Crete Senesi, the named clay landscape of rolling grey clay hills and pronounced calanchi (badlands). The Benedictine abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a few kilometres from Asciano. The Arbia torrent runs through the surrounding valley system. There are no high mountains or national parks within about 15 km. Rapolano Terme, with thermal baths, lies within roughly 15 km. Siena, the provincial capital, is the nearest city with major services, a railway station and principal monuments (Duomo, Piazza del Campo). The surrounding countryside is agricultural: cereals, olive trees and vineyards are common, and the Crete Senesi is a distinct and often-visited Tuscan landscape.
