The cluster sits on the limestone terrain of the southern Murgia: low, karstified hills and plateaus cut by deep dry valleys (gravine). The local landscape includes ravine systems (the gravine that incision this part of the Murgia) and scattered cave sites used historically. Land use is predominantly agriculture: olive groves, cereal fields, some vineyards and isolated masserie (farmhouses). There is no large national park immediately adjacent; the Alta Murgia park lies further to the north. The nearest town of scale is Castellaneta itself, which has a historic centre and local services; the provincial capital Taranto is the main nearby city with a port, larger hospitals and industry. The town is known as the birthplace of the film star Rudolph Valentino.
