Monte Erice (Monte San Giuliano) rises immediately inland and the medieval town of Erice sits on its slopes. The Egadi Islands (Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo) lie offshore and are covered by the Area Marina Protetta Isole Egadi. The Riserva Naturale Orientata Saline di Trapani e Paceco (the Trapani salt pans) occupies the coastal plain to the east of the city. Trapani has a cable car (funivia) linking the city to Erice. The city has a commercial port with regular ferry and hydrofoil services to the Egadi islands. Aeroporto di Trapani–Birgi (Vincenzo Florio) lies to the southwest within a short drive. The area is historically and economically associated with salt production and with tuna fisheries (tonnara) and has local maritime and recreational boating activity. There are no ski lifts in the immediate area.
