The area is the central Friulian plain, flat agricultural country between the lower Tagliamento basin and the line of resurgence springs that runs across this part of the province. The Stella river system and the wetland zone around Rivignano, Talmassons and Palazzolo dello Stella are the nearest named natural features, with channels, springs and low-lying farmland rather than relief. Palmanova, the star-fort town, is the nearest place of note nearby and has UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Venetian Works of Defence. Udine is the nearest city of size, with the main services, rail links and historic centre. The area is known for intensive farming and for Friuli's wine country beginning further south and east, but the immediate surroundings are mainly plain-country villages and fields.
