The cluster sits in the Valli del Natisone in the eastern foothills of the Julian Prealps; Monte Matajur (1,641 m) is within about 10–12 km. The Natisone river and its tributaries run through the local valleys. The area lies on the Italy–Slovenia border and contains communities with a Slovene-speaking minority and bilingual place names. Nearest town of size is Cividale del Friuli (around 12–15 km), which has a medieval centre, museums and services and is part of the UNESCO serial site “Longobards in Italy: Places of Power.” Nearest alpine ski facilities are in the Friulian Alps (e.g. Sella Nevea, Tarvisio), typically a 60–90 minute drive. The immediate area is a network of small villages, wooded and agricultural hills and mountain ridges characteristic of the pre-Alpine border zone.
