The Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi begins just outside the urban area and covers the mountains above the basin. The Piave and the Ardo are the main rivers in the immediate area. Nevegal, the nearest local ski area on the ridge above Belluno, is about 20–30 minutes by road. Belluno itself is the nearest town of size and has a full historic centre, services, and rail links. The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and that designation applies to mountain systems in the surrounding area. The area is known for its position at the threshold between the Venetian plain and the Dolomite valleys.
