The cluster sits in the foothills of the central Apennines in southern Lazio. Within about 15 km are the Liri valley and the Liri river, which runs south through Cassino. The Abbey of Montecassino, a historic Benedictine monastery, lies roughly 10 km to the south. Cassino is the nearest town of size and provides a railway station on the Rome–Naples line, A1 motorway access, hospitals, supermarkets and secondary schools. The immediate surroundings are agricultural hills with areas of mixed woodland typical of this part of Lazio. The area is associated with the 1944 Battle of Montecassino and contains wartime cemeteries and memorials.
