Sorano itself is one of the main tufaceous hill towns of this part of Tuscany, with a historic settlement cut into volcanic rock, and Pitigliano and Sovana are within the same local landscape. The area lies inside the Città del Tufo archaeological park system, known for Etruscan cave roads and rock-cut necropolises. Monte Amiata rises to the north-east as the main mountain mass of the wider area, but it is outside the immediate 15 km landscape. The zone is known for tuff settlements, Etruscan remains and inland Maremma countryside.
