Monte Capanne (1,019 m), the island's highest mountain, is on Elba and lies within about 15 km of Rio. The Tyrrhenian Sea and Elba's granite coastline and sandy beaches form the immediate coastal landscape. The area is within the Parco Nazionale Arcipelago Toscano (Tuscan Archipelago National Park), which covers much of Elba and surrounding marine areas. A cable car runs from Marciana to the summit of Monte Capanne; there are no alpine ski areas on the island. Portoferraio, the island's main town, is the nearest larger town and offers ferry links to Piombino, shops, services and the island hospital. The municipality of Rio includes the former mining centres Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba; Rio Marina hosts a small mining museum documenting the island's iron-ore extraction history. Elba is served by a small regional airport at Marina di Campo and by frequent car-ferry services to the Tuscan mainland.
