The Arno river crosses the city and the surrounding plain. The Tyrrhenian coast with beaches and bathing settlements (Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia) lies within 15 km. The Parco Regionale Migliarino, San Rossore e Massaciuccoli (regional park) occupies coastal pine forests, dunes and wetlands between the city and the sea. The Piazza dei Miracoli (cathedral complex including the Leaning Tower and Baptistery) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site inside Pisa. Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei) is immediately west of the urban area. The city is the seat of the University of Pisa and related research institutes. No mountain range or ski lifts are within 15 km; the setting is a low-lying river and coastal plain with agricultural land.
