The coast is close at the Gulf of Lions sector of the Mediterranean, with the long beach and dune system of Plagemesu and Fontanamare in the Gonnesa territory, and the cliffs and Pan di Zucchero stack at Masua in the neighbouring coast within the local area. Much of this coast falls within the Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna, created around the former mining districts of Iglesiente and Sulcis. Iglesias is the nearest town of size and has a substantial historic centre and services. The area is known for former lead and zinc mining, coastal cliffs, and the industrial archaeology of the Iglesiente.
