Coastal town fronting the Tyrrhenian Sea; beaches and a seafront promenade and local harbour facilities are part of the town. The Nebrodi Mountains lie inland and the area is on the northern edge of the Parco dei Nebrodi (Nebrodi Regional Park). No ski lifts within about 15 km; the nearest Sicilian ski areas (Madonie, Mount Etna) are much farther inland. The A20 autostrada (Messina–Palermo) and the Palermo–Messina rail line serve the coastal corridor. Nearest city of significant size is Messina to the east (regional rail and ferry connections); Palermo and Catania are the main regional airports for longer travel. Local economy includes seaside tourism, fishing and coastal services, and surrounding hills are used for citrus, olive and other agriculture.
