The area sits in the inland Marche hills on the upper Potenza valley, with the central Apennines rising to the west. Monti Sibillini National Park begins within roughly this radius to the southwest, and the Sibillini mass is the main mountain presence in daily view and movement around the area. Camerino is the nearest town of size, with a historic centre and university functions. The wider area is known for hill towns, mixed farmland and woodland, and for the road approach toward the Sibillini and the high Apennines.
