The cluster is on the eastern Sicilian hills above the Ionian coast, with the Peloritani foothills inland and the lower Alcantara valley close by. The nearest coast is the Ionian Sea around Letojanni and Taormina. The Alcantara River and the Alcantara valley are nearby; the Gole dell’Alcantara are within the wider local area but outside a tight village radius. Taormina is the nearest town of size and has extensive services, rail access at Taormina-Giardini, and a major historic centre with the Greek theatre. Mount Etna is the dominant mountain of this part of Sicily but it is farther away and not inside the immediate 15 km landscape. The area is known for hill villages above the Taormina coast, citrus and olive cultivation, and the concentration of historic settlements on the slopes between coast and valley.
