The cluster is on the Ionian side of the Peloritani foothills, with steep ridges and short valleys rising immediately inland. The Fiumara d’Itala runs through the local valley to the Ionian Sea. Within this stretch of coast the landscape is a narrow coastal strip backed at once by the Peloritani mountains, with continuous sea views from many points above the shore. Messina is the nearest city of size, with ferry port, rail station, hospitals and full services. This part of north-eastern Sicily is known for hillside villages above the Strait area and for citrus and olive cultivation on the lower slopes.
