This is on the plain at the foot of the Romagna Apennines, with cultivated land and low hills beginning to the south around the Santerno valley. The Santerno river runs through Imola. The Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park lies within daily local reach in the hills to the south-west, with gypsum ridges and badlands around the Riolo Terme side. The nearest substantial upland landscape is the Apennine belt south of Castel del Rio and Firenzuola. Bologna is the nearest major city, while Imola itself is a sizeable service town with a full historic centre, the Rocca Sforzesca and the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The area is known for its agricultural plain, the Santerno corridor and motor-racing at Imola. Because the cluster is inside the built-up area of a city above 50,000 residents, the urban cap applies.
