Monte Subasio (peak ~1,290 m) and the Monte Subasio massif lie immediately above the town and are within a 15 km radius. There are no large lakes or a coastline within 15 km; the Tiber valley lies further to the west. The Parco Regionale del Monte Subasio covers part of the massif and is within reach of the cluster. Nearest alpine downhill ski lifts are in the central Apennines (Sibillini and Monte Terminillo areas), typically about 1.5–2 hours' drive. Perugia is the nearest city of size (roughly 15–20 km away) and provides a university, a regional hospital, larger shops and cultural institutions; the Perugia–San Francesco d'Assisi (Umbria International) airport and the railway station at Santa Maria degli Angeli are both very close to Assisi. The historic centre of Assisi, including the Basilica of San Francesco and associated Franciscan sites, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is known for pilgrimage linked to St Francis and for medieval fresco cycles (Giotto and others) in the basilicas, and the surrounding countryside supports olive groves and other agriculture on the Subasio slopes and the adjoining plain.
