Lago di Santa Maria lies by Castiglione dei Pepoli, and the area is close to the headwaters and upper valleys that feed the Setta and Brasimone. Much of the surrounding territory falls within the Suviana e Brasimone Regional Park, with forest, reservoirs and walking terrain spread across this part of the Bolognese Apennines. The nearest ski area is Corno alle Scale, roughly an hour’s drive, so skiing is not at the door. Castiglione dei Pepoli itself is a small service centre with basic shops and rail access nearby on the Bologna-Florence line. The area is known for chestnut woods, reservoirs and Apennine hiking country.
