On the Tuscan‑Emilian Apennines ridge: the locality includes the Passo dell'Abetone and nearby summits. Abetone ski area with downhill runs and lifts on Monte Gomito is centred on the pass and lies within a few kilometres of the town. The valley below is the Val di Lima (Lima river) which descends from the pass toward the Pistoia plain. No national park is centred on the town; protected areas of the Tuscan‑Emilian Apennines lie further along the ridge to the north and east. Nearest larger local centres include San Marcello Piteglio; the provincial capital Pistoia is the nearest city with a railway station and full provincial services. The area is known regionally for winter skiing and for summer mountain activities such as hiking and mountain‑bike trails.
