The Lucanian Apennines rise around Avigliano, with wooded hills and higher ridges toward Monte Carmine and the mountain country between Potenza and Melfi. The area is close to the upper Basento valley and to the artificial Lake Pietra del Pertusillo only farther away, so the immediate landscape is mainly inland mountain and hill country rather than a lake setting. Potenza is the nearest town of size, with rail links, services, shops and hospitals. The area is known for chestnut woods, upland farming and the mountain villages of inland Basilicata.
