This area lies in the first hills and valleys southwest of Bologna, on the transition from the Po plain to the Bolognese Apennine foothills. The Samoggia valley is the main local landscape feature. The nearest larger city is Bologna, with a major historic centre, rail connections and the airport. Bazzano, now part of Valsamoggia, has the Rocca dei Bentivoglio on its hill above the town. Monteveglio, also in Valsamoggia, has the hilltop abbey area and is inside the Parco regionale dell'Abbazia di Monteveglio, now part of the wider Emilia Orientale protected area. The area is known for vineyards, mixed farmland and the Lambrusco Grasparossa zone.
