This is on the Romagna plain at the foot of the first Apennine hills, with the Lamone valley opening southwest of town. The nearest larger natural relief is the Apennine ridge toward Marradi and the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, but the higher mountains are beyond the immediate area. Faenza is a substantial town with a historic centre, rail links and services, and it is widely known for ceramic production; its name gave rise to the French word faïence. Brisighella, a short distance into the hills, is a well-known old hill town and is listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The area around Faenza is known for vineyards and orchards across the plain and lower hills.
