The town sits at the confluence of the Ticino and Po rivers; both rivers are immediate landscape features. The Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino (regional park) runs along the Ticino in this area. South of the town the first slopes of the Oltrepò Pavese wine hills begin within about 15 km. The surrounding territory is the flat Po Valley plain with intensive agriculture, irrigation canals and rice-growing areas to the west (Lomellina). The Certosa di Pavia monastery complex lies a few kilometres north of the town. Pavia contains a historic university (University of Pavia), a medieval centre and regional rail and road links toward Milan; local services include hospitals and professional services. The area is known for rice cultivation, market gardening and the wines of Oltrepò Pavese.
