The cluster is in the built-up area of Potenza, so the setting is an inland provincial city on steep Apennine slopes rather than open countryside. The Lucanian Apennines surround the area, with wooded ridges and ravines immediately around the city. The Basento valley cuts through this part of Basilicata. Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese lies to the south within the wider area of the province, but not inside the city itself. Potenza is the nearest town of size and has the province's main services, rail links and administrative functions. This part of Basilicata is known for mountain landscapes, forests and dispersed hill settlements.
