The Aspromonte massif rises inland; its lower slopes and foothills lie within the surrounding 15 km. The town fronts the Tyrrhenian Sea coast with beaches and rocky headlands. Parts of the Aspromonte are protected as Aspromonte National Park, whose lower reaches are in the local area. There are no ski lifts nearby; any winter-sports facilities are on higher ground and require a longer drive. The nearest city of size is Reggio Calabria, which provides regional rail, ferry connections to Sicily and the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia (home of the Riace Bronzes). The area has coastal tourism and fishing alongside inland agriculture (olive and citrus cultivation). Palmi is known locally for the annual Varia religious procession.
