This area lies in the first hills south of the Po plain, with the northern Apennine foothills beginning within a few kilometres. The Secchia valley is nearby to the east, and the lower slopes and wooded ridges of the Reggiano Apennines are the main landscape element within reach. Reggio Emilia is the nearest city of size, with full services, rail connections and a historic centre. The area is known for mixed farming and vineyards, including the Lambrusco zone, and for the food culture of the Reggio-Modena plain and foothills.
