The cluster is in the northern Apennines, in the Reno valley, with wooded ridges and agricultural clearings around the settlements. The area is close to the Corno alle Scale massif and regional park, which lie within roughly 15 km to the south; the nearest ski lifts are at Corno alle Scale, about 30–40 minutes by road from Vergato. Vergato is the nearest service town and has rail links along the Porrettana line, shops and everyday services. Within the same stretch of valley are small Apennine centres such as Grizzana Morandi, an area associated with the painter Giorgio Morandi, and the landscape is typical of the Bolognese mountain fringe rather than of the Po plain.
