The cluster sits inside the Chianti Classico hills, a contiguous landscape of vineyards and olive groves used for production of Chianti Classico wine. Castello di Brolio and the Ricasoli estate, a medieval castle and long-established winery, lie within the comune of Gaiole. Nearby medieval hill towns within about 15 km include Radda in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti, both with historic centres and local services. Gaiole is the base for the L'Eroica vintage cycling event and is crossed by white 'strade bianche' gravel roads used by cycling and agritourism. The nearest city of size is Siena, which provides a cathedral, university services and train connections. The area is known for wine tourism, agritourism accommodations and small-scale olive oil production.
