The area around
Location score 55/100Siena's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains Piazza del Campo and the Duomo di Siena. The city is the provincial capital and the nearest town of size, with the University of Siena, hospital services and regional rail and bus connections to Florence, Grosseto and other Tuscan towns. The immediate rural surroundings include the Crete Senesi landscape to the south and southeast, a clay-formed rolling terrain found within the province. The countryside around Siena is part of Tuscany's wine and olive-oil producing territory; vineyards and olive groves are common locally and Chianti-producing areas lie to the north/northwest. There are no ski lifts within the immediate area; Apennine ski areas are a longer drive from Siena. The area is known for the Palio di Siena (the historic horse race) and for medieval architecture concentrated in the city centre.
