The cluster is in the Val Senales/Schnalstal in the Ötztal Alps. The Senales river runs down the valley, and the upper valley leads to the Vernago reservoir and the glacier area at Maso Corto/Kurzras. Much of the municipality lies inside the Gruppo di Tessa/Texelgruppe Nature Park. The nearest ski lifts are in the upper valley at Maso Corto, about 15 km from much of the settled part of the valley, with glacier skiing above. The nearest town of size is Merano, which has full services, a rail connection via the nearby Val Venosta line, and a substantial historic centre. The area is known for the Ötzi find at the Giogo di Tisa/Similaun pass above the valley and for transhumance routes over the high passes.
