The Dolomites are the immediate setting here, with the Sesto Dolomites and the Fanes–Sennes–Braies group around the upper Puster Valley. Lake Dobbiaco lies by the town, and Lake Braies is within the local mountain area. The Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park and the Tre Cime Nature Park are both tied to this part of the valley. Cross-country skiing is centred in Dobbiaco itself, and the nearest major alpine lifts are at San Candido/Monte Baranci and in the Tre Cime Dolomiti area a short drive away. The nearest larger centre is Brunico, with full services and rail connections, while Cortina d'Ampezzo is reachable over the passes. The area is known for Nordic skiing, summer hiking and access to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo sector of the Dolomites, part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site.
