The cluster sits on the hill-top town whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for its surviving medieval tower skyline. The town occupies a spur above the Val d’Elsa; the Elsa river flows through the valley within the local area. The surrounding land is agricultural: vineyards (including production of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a DOCG wine) and olive groves are common within the 15 km radius. There are no national parks or regional parks immediately within 15 km. There are no ski lifts within 15 km; the nearest Alpine/Apennine ski areas (for example Abetone) are many tens of kilometres by road. Nearby towns of size within the local area include Colle di Val d’Elsa and Poggibonsi; those towns provide railway stations on the Florence–Siena line and larger commercial and health services.
