The cluster sits on the hill around the town of Montalcino, a medieval hilltown with a fortress (Fortezza) that is the local service and market centre. The surrounding landscape is the Val d'Orcia cultural landscape and is included in the Val d'Orcia UNESCO World Heritage Site. Immediate surroundings are rolling clay hills worked as vineyards (including estates producing Brunello di Montalcino), olive groves and arable fields, with characteristic lines of cypress and scattered farmhouses. The Orcia river valley is the main valley-forming feature of the wider area. The nearest city of significant size is Siena, to the north, which provides hospitals, a university and rail connections. The area is known principally for Brunello di Montalcino wine production and associated agritourism.
