Montesano sits in the Vallo di Diano inland valley on the northern edge of the Cilento area and the southern Apennine foothills. The comune lies inside (or immediately adjacent to) the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The park and the Vallo di Diano are included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Cilento and Vallo di Diano area (which also highlights the Certosa di Padula). The Certosa di San Lorenzo at Padula is a major monument in the same valley within short driving distance. The Tanagro river runs through the Vallo di Diano valley. The surrounding high ground includes the Monti Alburni and the nearby Apennine massifs (hiking and mountain terrain). The Tyrrhenian coast (Gulf of Policastro) is roughly 23 km to the southwest. Local towns of size within the valley include Padula and Sala Consilina; these provide regional services and access roads into the valley. The local economy is mainly rural: mixed agriculture, olive growing and small-scale farming, with tourism linked to the park and the Certosa.
