The Ligurian Apennines and the upper Vara valley are the immediate landscape here. The Vara river runs through this part of the valley. The area is linked to the Parco naturale regionale di Montemarcello-Magra-Vara farther down the valley system, but the setting around the town itself is mainly wooded ridges, pasture and scattered hamlets rather than a protected showpiece core. The nearest larger centre is Sestri Levante on the coast, while La Spezia is the main city for rail, port and services. This part of eastern Liguria is known for upland farming and for the circular historic centre of Varese Ligure.
