Lake Garda is within the area, with the southern lake shore around Desenzano del Garda and Padenghe sul Garda close by. The moraine hills south of the lake shape the local landscape, with mixed farmland, vineyards and olive cultivation. Lonato del Garda itself has the Visconti-Venetian Rocca over the town and the Casa del Podestà museum complex. Desenzano del Garda is the nearest larger town, with rail links, lakefront services and a substantial historic centre. Sirmione and the main southern Garda resort belt are nearby for daily life, but the setting here is inland from the shore rather than directly on it. The area is known for Lake Garda tourism, wine production in the Lugana and Garda zones nearby, and olive oil.
