The area sits on the Ionian coast around the Gulf of Taranto and includes the two connected inlets known locally as the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo. The historic old town (Città Vecchia) occupies a small island/peninsula connected to the mainland by bridges and includes the Castello Aragonese and the Ponte Girevole (swing bridge) on the waterfront. The city contains a major commercial port and an Italian naval base on the Mar Grande. A large steelworks complex (the Ilva/ArcelorMittal plant) and associated industrial areas occupy part of the waterfront and the Tamburi district. The Mar Piccolo supports local fishing and extensive mussel aquaculture (cozze). There are local sandy and rocky bathing stretches on the Ionian coast near the city. Archaeological remains from the Magna Graecia period and the National Archaeological Museum (MArTA) are in the city. Within roughly 15 km the landscape is primarily low-lying coastal plain, urban and industrial fabric, with agricultural hinterland beyond the built-up area.
