The cluster sits on the slopes of the Monti della Laga, part of the central Apennines. The territory is inside (or immediately adjacent to) the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The local landscape is mountain terrain of forested slopes, high meadows/pastures and small mountain streams. The nearest small towns and service centres in the valley include municipal centres such as Isola del Gran Sasso and other mountain villages; the provincial capital Teramo is the nearest city with full hospital, train and larger-shop services. Nearest alpine ski lifts are on the Gran Sasso massif (Prati di Tivo), reached by mountain roads. The area has a history of mountain agriculture and pastoralism and is used for hiking, mountain biking and seasonal grazing.
