The area around
Location score 55/100Monte Erice (Monte Eryx) and the hilltown of Erice sit on a ridge a few kilometres above Trapani and are accessible by road and by the Trapani–Erice cable car. The town fronts the Mediterranean (western Sicily / Strait of Sicily) and the port has regular ferry services to the Egadi Islands (Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo). The Riserva naturale orientata Saline di Trapani e Paceco (salt-pans nature reserve) lies immediately to the east/northeast of the town and contains engineered salterns and historic windmills; the area is used for sea-salt production and for birdwatching. The port also has seasonal passenger links across the central Mediterranean (including to Tunis at times); regional rail and road links connect Trapani with Palermo and Marsala. Aeroporto di Trapani–Birgi (Vincenzo Florio) is the nearest airport, roughly 15–20 km away by road. There are no ski lifts in the immediate area. The area is historically associated with tuna-fishing (tonnara) and salt production.
