The town sits on the edge of the Murgia karst plateau where deep ravines (local 'gravine') cut the limestone and are present immediately around Massafra, including rock-hewn dwellings and rupestrian churches near the gorge. The Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea) is about 8 km to the south; the coast and beaches of the Ionian shore are the nearest maritime access. The surrounding land within 15 km is largely agricultural: olive groves, orchards and cereal fields interspersed with tracts of scrub on karst soil. Nearby small towns include Mottola and Palagianello within the same sub-region; the provincial capital Taranto is the nearest city of size (industrial port, hospital and rail connections, Museo Archeologico Nazionale) to the south-west. No national park or UNESCO site lies inside the immediate 15 km radius.
