The cluster is in the Tiber valley below the volcanic ridge of the Monti Amerini, with wooded hills and farmed slopes around Guardea. The Tevere runs nearby and Lake Alviano, formed by a dam on the river, is within the local area. The Oasi WWF Lago di Alviano lies here, a protected wetland known for birdlife. Amelia is the nearest historic town of size, with substantial walls and a Roman and medieval centre; Orvieto and Todi are farther but still important service and cultural towns for the wider area. This part of southern Umbria is known for olive groves, mixed farming and small hill towns on volcanic and alluvial terrain.
